‘adventure around Far Wild West of Nepal Himalaya into Dolpo’

Welcome in the country of elusive Snow Leopard and Blue Sheep on this fabulous Lower Dolpo Trekking, located around Far West Nepal Himalaya within Wild West and home of Dolpo people with ancient practice of Bon sect (pre-Buddhist) religion of Tibetan origin in both culture and traditional life.

Lower Dolpo Trekking leads you to remote and isolated areas and villages where most of the outside world people hardly know of this lost and hidden country, where American author Peter Matessian has described on its classic novel ‘Snow Leopard’ as well Oscar nominated for foreign film in late 1990’s called ‘The Himalaya’.

Truly a mind blowing journey and adventure within Nepal largest Shey-Phuksumdo National Park with an area of where endangered wild-life snow leopard, herd of blue sheep and other animals dwells in this beautiful country of Lower Dolpo areas.

Starting with sweeping flight to reach Nepal lowest warm areas of South West at Nepalgunj city and then connecting with another exciting flight to land at Dolpo in Jhupal, where our adventure leads to interesting villages and town with ever present views of snow capped peaks and wide beautiful valley of Dho-Tarap.

As walk proceeds walking into inner and lower Dolpo villages of Tarakot and impressive Toku Gaon exploring villages and monasteries of great interest, then crossing high pass of Numa-la and Baga-la towards scenic Phuksumdo Lake, with time to visit around its traditional Ringmo village and around the lake.

Finally our walk slowly comes to an end following the trail to Dunai, a headquarter town of Dolpo and then completing the journey at Jhupal where an exciting flight brings you back in Kathmandu with overwhelming adventure on Lower Dolpo Trekking.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 01: On arrival in Kathmandu meet our staff for transfer to hotel

On arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuwan International Airport received by our staff and guide with warm welcome and greetings and then transfer to your hotels in the heart of Kathmandu city. After checking into your rooms getting refreshed from Jet-Lag, a quiet environment after getting refreshed join at main hall or in lobby where our guide will provide briefing on treks-hotels with necessary information. Evening includes group dinner in a typical Nepali restaurant with folk culture program with various dances of Nepal while having your authentic Nepalese dinner with local entertainment.

Day 02: Morning in Kathmandu with tour and fly to Nepalgunj city.

Morning after hearty breakfast depart from the hotel where our city and tour guide leads you for exciting guided sightseeing around Kathmandu. Although Kathmandu a metropolitan city still retains its ancient culture and traditional way of life with many world heritage sites to visit of great interest. After morning tour back to hotel for refreshment and then transfer to Kathmandu domestic air terminal for sweeping and scenic flight to land at Nepalgunj city airport, during air fabulous panorama of Himalayan peaks. On reaching at Nepalgunj airport transfer to near city hotels for overnight with time to browse around Nepalgunj city of strong Indian influence due to its closeness with Indian border of UP (Utter Pradesh) climate here of sub-tropical temperatures.

Day 03: Fly to Jhupal 2,475 m (40 mins on air) and then drive to Dunai 2,140 m - 04 hrs.

Having early breakfast then transfer to airport for connecting short flight to land at Jhupal within Dolpo, on reaching at Jhupal, join with our trekking staff and trek to Dunai for overnight stop, walk leads through interesting farm villages and farm lands with views of snow capped peaks in the distance, few hours of first day nice and pleasant walk reaches your at Dunai for overnight stop in local nice lodge. Dunai, headquarter and administrative town of Dolpo district, an interesting place to explore in the afternoon to observe Nepal Far Western Nepalese cultures and custom of both Hindu and Buddhist religion with fascinating cultures.

Day 04: Trek to Tarakot 2,537 m - 06 hrs

Starting first day walk, heading past Dunai and smaller villages and into small woodland and then following a nice trail all the way to Tarakot, an interesting large village with well maintained terraced farm fields. Tarakot with old historical fortress (Dzong or Kot) guarding the village with famous old Sandul Gompa (monastery) located on the junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River where overnight camp is set.

Day 05: Trek to Laini Odar - 3,475 m - 06 hrs.

Morning walk leaving this interesting village towards inner and lower Dolpo country, as walk leads past many small farm villages and cattle herder camps then entering a small forested area on following a river upstream to camp at Lanine Odar, a place with overhanging rocky caves by the river side.

Day 06: Trek to Naurpani 3,653 m - 07 hrs.

Today walks lead towards Tarap nice valley, as the trail enter into a narrow gorge with some vegetation of bushes of juniper and wild rose, walk leads past Toltol with a large overhanging cave, around this area might see some wild life like Naur or Blue Sheep and other animals. As the walk progress reaching a confluence of River Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, overnight camp by the river after a long day walk of about seven hours.

Day 07: Trek to Dho Tarap 3,944 m - 07 hrs.

Another long day to reach within the heart of Dho Tarap wide valley, this is one of the scenic large valleys with many Sheppard’s settlements herding Yaks and Sheep, as walk to a long gradual climb to Tarap valley, one of the largest and longest valley of Dolpo area which is about 20 k.m. Which stretches following Tarap Chu River most of the way to joins with Thuli Bheri River, walk leads past Langa with beautiful cascading waterfalls heading due south following the trail after Sisaul and small place of Kesila around Yak herders temporary camps. Walk continues to our overnight camp at Dho Tarap, this is another interesting village with mix tribes of Tibetans origin and Magar hill people.

Day 08: Rest day to explore on this wild beautiful surrounding.

After several days of long good scenic walks, today a free and a rest day to explore this enchanting wide valley and interesting Dho-Tarap village witness villagers age old traditional way of life similar to Tibetans and visit its old interesting monastery of both Bon sect and Buddhist religion.

Day 09: Trek to Toku Gaon 4,209 m - 03 hrs.

From Dho Tarap village, today a short walk to Toku Gaon, another large interesting village to explore of inner Dolpo region, morning starts with slow uphill of few hours of good walk to Toku Gaon for overnight, this is one of the most impressive and interesting village of Dolpo area, consist of more than ten villages and nice tended farm fields with old impressive monasteries.

Day 10: Trek to Numa-La Pass base 4,440 -04 hrs.

With pleasant stop at Tokyu Gaon morning leads to much barren country around remote and isolated areas to reach at Numa-la Phedi or bottom at above 4,440 m high, rest of the afternoon free for short walks around this great scenic country.

Day 11: Cross Numa-La 5,238 m and descend to base of Baga-La pass 4,531 m - 07 hrs

Morning walk leads to Numa-la South at 5,238 meters, the highest spot of the adventure, climb on nice grassy slopes for about three hours then reaching at the top of Numa-la with impressive views of Dhaulagiri mountain range to Kagmara peak and looking down at beautiful valleys and surrounding dramatic landscapes, after an enjoyable moment descend to the base of this high pass, then with few hours of good walk on gradual path to reach our overnight camp on a summer pasture fields at the base or Phedi of another Baga-la pass.

Day 12: Cross over Baga-La 5,214 m and trek to Yak Kharka 3,995 m - 07 hrs

Morning leads to a steep climb to the top of Baga-la offering views of Dhaulagiri range of peaks, and then a long descend to reach at Modo valley, time permitting visit its monastery, here where the path from Upper Dolpa meets at Yak Kharka a summer pasture for grazing yaks and other cattle.

Day 13: Trek to Phuksumdo Lake 3,630 m - 04 hrs.

Morning walk from the base of Baga-la and Yak Kharka leads to our final destination at Phuksumdo Lake after walking to another side of Dolpo area heading west after crossing Baga-la and Numa-la. Walk leads past Muduwa village and the stream of Muduwa on a valley gorge to reach a small grazing area at Temche near Ghuchun Khola (stream). Walk continues for few hours into pine and birch trees to reach at upper side of Phuksumdo Khola, after a short break continue walk to Ringmo village, an interesting, attractive Tibetan like village with mud plastered chhorten and Mani (prayer) walls. From here a short walk to Phuksumdo Lake for overnight camp by the shore of beautiful turquoise Phuksumdo Lake.

Day 14: At Phuksumdo Lake rest and explore around Ringmo village and the lake

Enjoy another day at beautiful Phuksumdo Lake, an opportunity to soak in local Dolpo villages around Ringmo of immense culture and custom, where you explore this pristine areas often visited by few other trekkers.

Day 15: Trek to Chhepka 2,838 m - 06 hrs

After a wonderful stop at Phuksumdo Lake, morning walk leads to cross Pungmo Khola and its valley with several streams to cross, from here trek leads downhill passing spread out houses with walnut trees close to a stream at Dhera a small cattle herders settlements. From here a short climb to Rahagaon village of Thakuri Hindu people, then downhill into thick forest to reach overnight camp at Chhepka near Ankhe, a small village by the entrance of Shey Phuksumdo National Park.

Day 16: Trek to Rupghat 2,070 m - 06 hrs

After overnight at Chhepka, morning walk with short climb and descend through forest reaching a river bank, from here climb on leaving the forest, from the top walk uphill to forested area leading upstream to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village, trek further to Sumdu near Sulighat to reach at Rupghat village for overnight stop, after crossing a bridge over Thulo Bheri River with views of Kagmara peak.

Day 17: Trek to Dunai and drive back to Jhupal - 04 hrs.

After a pleasant overnight at Rupghat near Dunai, our last day treks leads to Dunai for short while and then taking an exciting drive to reach our final end of the journey at Jhupal for last overnight stop in Low Dolpo trekking before taking a scenic flight back to Kathmandu.

Day 18: Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj

Morning transfer to small Jhupal airstrip for the flight to Nepalgunj, after boarding in small aircraft where short flight brings you at Nepalgunj for connecting flight of 50 minutes to reach back at Kathmandu. On reaching at Kathmandu airport, then transfer to your hotel with rest of the day at leisure with grand memories of Lower Dolpo trekking.

Day 19: Contingency or free day in Kathmandu for individual activities.
